PSYC 222 - Psychology of Cults 3 Credit(s)
Cults have been a fascinating - and dangerous - phenomenon for centuries. What makes a group a “cult”? We will analyze various aspects of cults from a psychological perspective. Major units include (1) defining cults, (2) analyzing whether various historical groups “count” as cults, (3) psychological traits of cult leaders and followers, (4) psycho-logical tactics of manipulation used by cults, and (5) escape and healing from cults. Several famous groups will be analyzed (e.g. Jonestown, Scientology, NXIVM).
Prerequisite(s): PSYC 100 or PSYC 111 , or permission from instructor.
Course Frequency: AN
Grading Method: Student option.
Learning Outcomes:
- Analyze the definition of “cult” and apply it to famous groups from history.
- Apply psychological concepts and theories to cult leaders, cult members, and cult manipulation tactics.
- Apply psychological principles to the process of leaving a cult and mentally healing.
