CRIM 230 - Survey of Criminal Courts

This course will provide a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practice of the United States criminal court system. It will explore the structure and function of the courts as well as the process and politics of the state and federal judicial systems.

Prerequisite(s): CRIM 101 .

Course Frequency: ALT S

Grading Method: Student option.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Discuss the foundations of our court system and its historical development.
  2. Identify the steps in the process/ procedures of a court case as it makes its way through the system.
  3. Identify the different perspectives regarding the role of the court system in the broader scope of the criminal justice system and be able to compare them.
  4. Describe the various roles of the players in the court room.
  5. Assess the effectiveness of the American criminal court system.
