SCWK 235 - Human Behavior and the Social Environment I

This is the first of two courses in the human behavior and the social environment sequence. It focuses on biological, social, and psychological development of the individual in the environment from conception to death. The course addresses the complex interpersonal relationships of the individual and family systems and explores the impact of oppressions and privileges as they interact with larger social structures. Students develop knowledge of human behavior within the social environment, engage diversity in practice, and apply critical thinking skills to use this knowledge to advance human rights and social and economic justice.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate the ability to use research findings to improve practice, policy, and social service delivery.
  2. Demonstrate skill in assessing how social welfare and economic policies impact the delivery of and access to social services.
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking to analyze, formulate, and advocate for policies that advance human rights and social, racial, economic, and environmental justice.
  4. Demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of human behavior and person-in-environment, and other culturally responsive theoretical frameworks, in the assessment of data from client systems.
