PSYC 298 - Drugs and Behavior

This course is an introduction to psychopharmacology, the study of drugs that affect behavior, cognition, and emotions. Concepts relevant to numerous psychological, sociological, and biomedical careers in which clients are taking drugs, therapeutically or recreationally, will be covered. Students will be exposed to the principles of pharmacology (pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, etc.), factors that influence the variability of drug effects, the implications and challenges of categorizing drugs, the mechanisms of action of selected psychoactive drugs, and how drugs affect behavior.

Prerequisite(s): PSYC 100 .

Course Frequency: ALT S

Grading Method: Student option.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe key principles of psychopharmacology.
  2. Describe key psychological factors affecting drug effects and use.
  3. Describe the mechanisms of actions, routes of administrations, preparations, and other key properties of common psychoactive drugs.
  4. Procure peer-reviewed scientific literature on relevant topics in psychopharmacology.
  5. Interpret the results of research in psychopharmacology.
