PSPA 320 - State and Local Politics 3 Credit(s)
Political and administrative processes in the American states are examined from comparative and historical perspectives. Several class meetings are dedicated to studying various accounts of policy variation between states, focusing on the subjects of political culture, procedural and structural differences, and the importance of socioeconomic variables. Additional topics may include electoral and budgetary politics.

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will distinguish socioeconomic and political/structural variables in models of state-level variation in policy content.
- Students will sketch the implications of various theories of the public policy process relevant to the study of state politics.
- Informed by theories of voting behavior, students will construct their own hypothesis connecting state-level variation in voting systems to overall level of participation (voter turnout) and the outcomes of state-level elections.
