PSCN 245 - Introduction to American Law


3 Credit(s)

A survey of the law of civil procedure, torts, property, contracts, employment, and domestic relations. Also included are brief introductions to administrative law, criminal law, criminal procedure, and legal research and writing. Several discussions address the development of the law of equity and various common law remedies. Students also examine the role of the bench and bar in shaping public policy.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Students will recognize the differences between federal and state legal systems.
  2. Students will explain basic principles of law in the area of civil procedure, torts, contracts, property, landlord-tenant relationships, criminal law/procedures, probate, and employment.
  3. Students will sketch the institutional sources of law impacting state and federal legal systems.
  4. Students will describe basic legal processes informing civil and criminal actions in the state and federa courts.
  5. Students will appraise legal arguments rooted in the principles of law idenitfied in Course Outcome #2.
