Creating and maintaining a sustainable relationship between humans and the environment is a complex and value laden process. This course examines the connections between changing global processes and their impact on local ecosystems. Students will explore ecosystems, population structure and growth, species interaction, nutrient cycles, energy generation, and waste and environmental management. Students will actively explore and discuss relevant current environmental issues, including the effects of habitat fragmentation and loss, global change, and pollution. Throughout the course, students gain understating of natural systems through cultural, economic, political, and human contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

Identify and clearly describe at least eight global, regional, and/or community-scale environmental issues.
Articulate the value of ecosystem services and identify or suggest a sustainable framework for protecting those ecosystems.
Apply the scientific method to investigate environmental issues.
Link impacts of human actions to environmental issues, and impacts of environmental challenges to the health and wellbeing of individuals, groups, communities, and cultures.
