ENGL 334 - Introduction to Linguistics and Modern English Grammar 3 Credit(s)
This course is designed to give aspiring writers, editors, and teachers a deeper understanding of the English language. English is considered historically, structurally, and sociolinguistically. Emphasis will be placed on developing a working understanding of the conventions of modern English grammar and on critically evaluating prescriptive and descriptive approaches to grammar.
Prerequisite(s): English major or minor, secondary English Education major, Teaching English as a Second Language endorsement, or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes:
- Recognize the major concepts of phonetics.
- Identify phonological processes that affect pronunciation.
- Identify the two types of morphology: derivation and inflection.
- Break down sentences into the proper syntax in English through sentence diagrams and sentence trees.
- Reflect on their metalinguistic awareness over the term to articulate how this awareness will inform future teaching, writing, and/or editing practices.
